Hi Mr Jobbly,
Thanks for sharing the video overall, I’d say the video captures some real dynamics of life in venture capital, though it’s heavily focused on a particular entry path (typically graduates (usually finance) moving into VC). In reality, there are a variety of routes into the industry.
I’d also note that this portrayal seems heavily skewed US where the ecosystem is a lot more mature. It also feels closer to later-stage or large-fund VC, which can appear more process-driven and transactional with clear progression pathways and role delineation.
In smaller or more specialised funds, the day-to-day can look quite different. Roles tend to be less siloed, with individuals often given significantly more responsibility early on. You are often on the boards of multiple companies at the same time and leverage firm networks to add value where you cannot. Teams and hierarchies are typically less pronounced, with responsibilities spanning sourcing, execution, and diligence, as well as, in some cases, acting as a board representative for the fund. (Some may say ‘more scrappy’). As a result, individuals gain exposure and are given responsibility across the full investment lifecycle much earlier on.
(of course each fund operates differently and some may well resemble this caricature).
Hopefully that helps!
Best Ash
