Richard Handler of Jefferies has this advice. Sounds distinctly like wishful thinking ![]()
Continue licking boots until instructed otherwise.
I’ve never heard of anyone under the age of 35 in 2025 who pivoted from support to front office.
I guess DRick Handler likes his servants working hard and hoping. Carrot dangling in front of the donkey in perpetuity.
Oh and FWIW: the more valuable you make yourself, the less likely you’ll ever be transferred where you want, ironically - they’ll probably tell you that you’re too valuable to lose from your current team.
The reality of things in the age of AI is that those back-office roles will either be automated fully or integrated into the workflow of a front-office employee.
That might make you more attractive when applying to those kinds of hybrid roles, but banks are gonna prefer front-office experience over back-office for them any day of the week.
Long story short: it’s not looking good
I don’t either. But I do know multiple C-level executives at banks/funds who started in back/middle office roles, or as admins/EAs (which is admittedly a front office role, but not a prestigious one). I think highly of them.
Show up, work hard, give a sh*t, be a team player, ask for what you want. The advice is sound.
