Most overrated job in finance

Used to be execution trader in a hedge fund. Sounds special but is not and can be algorithmed out of existence. Others?

EA. Used to be an opportunity to develop a personal relationship with a senior MD, now involves working for a team of stressed and arrogant junior MDs while constantly being threatened with your job moving to India

By extension/extrapolation, anything where a majority of your colleagues are in an offshored office.

Not most overrated but the easiest one to be replaced, Accounting !

No one ever really rated accountants, really.

Also - pretty good work-life balance and pay per hour as a consequence. I wouldn’t want to be an accountant, but there are worse jobs.

what’s a worse finance job with a Master degree after Accounting ?

Compliance? Please see:ā€œI am trapped in compliance. Stability without fulfillment. Work without endā€

In terms of personal fulfilment, they are all overrated: I can’t imagine any normal person who wants to work in finance because really enjoys it. Probably, because of this, people are also worse than in other working environment, in general.

Alternative topic: where are the nicest people in finance?

Tbh, most people in finance, as long as they have some life experience, are quite nice I’ve found.

I don’t think people are inherently kinder or less kind working in certain divisions or functions or whatever. As long as they have the humility of a few years graft, they’re usually decent people

I’ve never met an analyst or associate anything that I liked as a person.

It’s like someone starts working for a big bank and immediately turns into a tool. Takes them a good while to get over it.

Also, I hate lawyers.

OK, I think that this has been misunderstood. And what I was saying it’s probably more controversial. It’s not about niceness or kindness. Being decent people it’s important (and yet remember what we said about the restrooms, so many decent people can’t use the shared facilities without being dirty and disgusting, are they still decent?), but it’s not enough.
Most of my colleagues, I just can’t bear them, and it’s not about their character.

Just read the article and as someone in BB IB compliance, I can sort of understand it. But as I have not worked on the business side / front office and I am not really interested in that myself, I don’t have a strong sadness like this person, because I’m not really longing for the ā€œother sideā€. Compliance definitely has the better worklifebalance and the pay is therefore even better sometimes per hour. I agree though with the lawyer part

Disagree on the lawyers. I’m actually quite shocked that I’ve met many more nice lawyers than annoying ones, both in the corporate and criminal space.

(I will note that some of them also find most lawyers to be tools who are way too into ā€˜Suits’ so i might just have an abnormal sample)

Noted that you have met criminal lawyers

Sales, but with clients, because they want to bring the maximum volume to the treasury desk.

Traders are the meaniest, but i don’t blame them, they’re too focused that they think if they say ā€˜hi’ to interns with a smile, it will cost them losses
