Pivot into Compliance?

Hello!

I’ve spent most of my career in learning and development. The last 13+ years with a financial services firm creating learning for financial advisors and their staffs.

I know the business very well, and found my niche of expertise working with the Compliance departments to make sure our learning was engaging, but met regulatory and legal requirements.

I very much like this intersection of learning and compliance. What would I need to pivot from learning and development into compliance?

What skills do I need to build, topics to learn, etc. to get started in that transition?

I don’t think there is clearly defined compliance skill set you can go out an learn. If you understand the legal and regulatory rules applicable to your business and the operations underpinning it, you have a good foundation. I would suggest you find a compliance association you can join and look for a mentor there or in your firm.

I would echo the above. It sounds to me like you found yourself already quite the niche, which on the one hand is good for Compliance, so you are a SME, but on the other hand, I would have no idea where to “put” you into. E.g. I’m working in financial crime compliance, which then has ACAMS or ACFCS as associations or ACFE for Fraud specialists. But from working in my bank I would have no idea where someone in your niche would even to be found. I guess in a more general compliance team and I do not know what association would be suitable for that topic. So maybe something to sort out with your compliance colleagues you already work with right now. But it sounds interesting and I wish you all the best!
