Had ~10% salary increases in each of the last few years but I’ve been told my firm is only raising pay for a few people this year… wonderful news

No, took a pay cut. I should have taken government hand-outs… 
Pay raises have been known as a common practice widely used to be part of competitive commitments from the negotiations when initially coming into the company driving perks, incentives, typically directly related to performance, special projects, and other contributions an employee has earned when exceeding expectations. A few of us are still getting raises even if sightly lowered, some raises have been built into starting from the interview and acceptance of the offer which can include anywhere from a 10% to 17% increase.
