I was asked in a work survey how many hours I’m working per week. I put down 60 hours because, i spend about 20 hours ‘working’ beyond my contracted hours.
I’m wondering how other people factor in phone breaks, smoke breaks or other periods of inaction. Sometimes if it’s a particularly long day I’ll sneak in a 30 minute nap, for example. Am I accidentally inflating my own workrate…
Factor it the way you want. As long as you are in the office, it counts. Unless you are being paid per hour and have to fill a timesheet, that 40h work-week is an imaginary number.
Since the pandemic it’s unusual if I’m not working. When I wake up, I check work emails and chats whilst sitting up in bed. I look at the calendar for the day ahead and start solutioning my problems. If it’s a WFH day I start flowcharting on the study whiteboard. If it’s WFO, I usually read mails on the train. The days go on like this. I don’t think my experience is unique at all, and many people are doing the same -60 hours pw feels like a light quote these days.
