Hello I am a student and I'm looking for a job

I am a student. I am studying finance at a UK Russell Group University and was told about this group by my careers service. I am interested in trading jobs but at this stage am pretty much open to anything. I’ve spent hours applying and have sent out hundreds of applications but I have got nothing back. Now I think I just need to focus on getting a good grade but I have no job for when I graduate. Any help and advice would be very appreciated!

@AdamC is right, the market is not good.

Maybe it was a mistake to study finance

Being a plumber, electrician or hairdresser is probably better regarding job prospects.
Even Bank of England is cutting 5,700 jobs to save £45m.

@Pedalhard No, absolutely It is not a mistake, the market will change.

Not sure about haidressers but I have friends who are plumbers and electricians and they do better than 99% of white collar workers I know.

I think only a handful of magic circle lawyers and bulge bracket bankers can really say they do better than the average qualified electrician.

In terms of compensation, that is. Prestige and of course work-life-balance is very different (electricians do significantly worse on the former, and significantly better on the latter).

The 3 professions I mentioned that cannot be simply replaced by AI. Prestige is not as highly regarded as it’s used to be, having an VP or EVP title after one’s name was a status symbol, not anymore. As for work life balance, you’re absolutely right, they can choose whenever they want to work.

Exactly. Which means they have better job security than white collar folk too.

… Remind me why I’m sitting in an office as we speak? :stuck_out_tongue:

And yet I have spent so much money on studying that to throw it all in the sky seems a shame really

Pedalhard. Yes the job market in finance is hard yet don’t give up on seeking a role. It is difficult to give you specific advice as we know so little about you, your education and qualifications. This (the bubble) is not the place to be seeking a role, use the actual efinancialcareers job board, and at your level the employers actual websites and job sites are far more relevant to you. Good luck!

(I am not a grad recruiter however I am an equities recruiter)

Hello and thank you for taking the time to reply. I have done all those things already but the responses have been almost nothing which is how I have ended up here. In your area of equities are there any particular jobs that might be good for me to put effort on?

It’s highly unlikely you will get a job without any experience under your belt.

I know a guy who got a job at a bank and only started looking post-graduation.

He works at my local NatWest branch, mind you, but still.

It’s an edge case.

Finance is BA/MBA driven out of grad school and the better the tier the better the prospects, there are a couple careers in compliance that can make 40k-50k/yr with limited training, trading and investing, you probably want to stay away from that unless you have desires to start a fund, institutional is getting hammered these days and probably won’t get better.

Are you applying for internships or graduate roles? Do you have any work experience or internships behind you? Market is right now but it’s tough in majority of professions.

Hello to you. I am interested in either. I don’t have any experience in banking and finance but have worked a bit in some small jobs. I am now studying hard for my final exams but the future seems very uncertain. Any advice would be tremendous for me.

maybe you don’t have job security but too much time to idle on a forum.
