Should I just retrain as a plumber?

I am starting to think I am not going to get another banking job. I’ve been looking since last September when a European bank let me go (associate, healthcare). No one seems to be hiring. I have applied for hundreds of jobs and am reaching the conclusion that it’s a waste of time. I have no money and have moved back in with my parents. It’s pretty bleak. I’m thinking I should try something totally different that is actually physical work. Has anyone else done this?

Try contract opportunities they may be a few months of career related work!

Dunno where you’re based but there’s high demand for intelligent gas engineers here in the UK - Electrician is currently an oversaturated career path. That was the usual go-to for smart people.

Gas engineer. If you have some savings, try to get in via an apprenticeship

Have you not heard of the AI pipe and boiler combo. I think it’s one of the new agentics under mythos. Plumbers been raving about it

I would tread carefully. These jobs are as competitive as any other and take years of training. You also need to pay a lot for personal insurance is my understanding

Maybe in the USA it is different but in the UK generally my plumbers have hardly been geniuses.

Electricians smart people yes, plumbers rarely

I seriously think a lot of finance jobs advertised simply don’t exist. Agencies just want to get a ‘bank’ of CV’s in their database.

I’m in the same boat as you as I’ve applied for probably 100 jobs with no luck. I worked in the Oil & Gas industry for 20 years and when Greta Thunberg opened her mouth it decimated the jobs in the Oil & Gas industry.

It’s picked up a bit now though and I’ve also been applying for jobs in that field as well as finance.

You have to keep trying though whatever direction you choose!

Yeah, for sure. There was talk on LinkedIn a few weeks ago about rogue recruitment agencies calling and pretending to be from other (more reputable) agencies to keep a pulse on who is recruiting and what. A vast proportion of “the jobs market” is really just people probing the jobs market.

I’m not surprised that fake jobs are part of that.

Keep staying at home and at your computer 9-5 applying for jobs, you will find yourself in an office and even get paid - Finding a job, is a job!

I wonder for how the recruiters are not jobless still? .no actual jobs , very less actual candidates being placed, still they have their agencies recruitment job secured.

I will tell myself this too

I do not believe that recruiters have had it easy

Did you see that Times article from a few days ago? “I’ve applied for 50 jobs. Meanwhile, my student debt has gone up £10k”

Putting aside her sports science degree, it’s very funny. 50 jobs is nothing. You can apply to 50 jobs in one day if you actually try
