Haven’t looked for a job in a while but I was speaking to some friends who had.
One of them told me that she never got as many job offers as when she put up a post saying that she had just been hired somewhere.
One of them hasn’t had a single recruiter reach out despite being arguably better qualified/more hireable/whatever than the other girl. We looked at his LI profile and the girl immediately said that his “looking for work” flag looked “desperate” and that it was “giving broke”
It’s probably fine, the big advantage for it usually comes for contract roles though where you can start immediately. If you’re looking for long-term gainful employment, maybe not. Also worth asking yourself if LinkedIn is really the best place to find employment in FS!
Here is an idea
Get linked in premium and looking for job status will be visible to recruiters only.
Or even better - never remove the status and you can just respond to requests when you need to
Does the reverse of this work? If you deliberately put #OpenToWork on knowing your employer will see it, does it pressure them into giving you a raise/promotion etc.? Or is it still just desperate looking.
It sounds like an incredibly high-risk tactic with little-to-no reward. It comes across as reckless, desperate, disloyal and ultimately career-suicide.
If your employer is willing to sack you because your profile picture has a little green banner, maybe that’s a sign that you’re better off somewhere else tbh
I think there used to be stigma attached to using the “Opentowork” frame. Over the last two years, in general people seem more confident about blatantly saying they want to move on or are actively seeking work, both via specific posts and using the frame. Clearly everyone has to assess whether there is a risk their existing employer will notice and weigh up the consequences, pros and cons for themselves! It certainly seems to work for some.
Interesting to hear the above. I don’t think it would put me off. To be honest, the skills / work experience match is a stronger indicator of approach rather than whether someone is available immediately.
I know some clients that have proactively approached individuals because they were immediately available and there was an opportunity. That’s rare though.
